Oak Competition Dominates Interspecific Interactions in Growth and Water-Use Efficiency in a Mixed Pine–Oak Mediterranean Forest

چکیده

In the Mediterranean, mixed forests of Aleppo pine and holm oak are widespread. Generally considered a transition stage in succession towards climax communities, niche segregation may also contribute to prevalence these communities. So far, there is increasing evidence hydrological segregation, with two species showing complementary water use seasonal growth patterns. However, it remains unknown whether interspecific interactions affect response climate mid-term (decadal) water-use efficiency pines oaks stands. Here, we combined tree-ring chronologies, built on different competition classes within stand, spatially explicit assessment individual wood carbon isotope discrimination (?13C), as proxy intrinsic efficiency, compared results previously reported uptake We found that modulated oaks, whereas was insensitive competition. On other hand, density affected only growth, both species. conclude presence had negligible or even positive effects but neighbor limited their ability recover after drought. Conversely, experienced greater drought stress under competition, pines.

Growth, Development and Yield in Pure and Mixed Forest Stands

Objective: Ecosystems with mixed species compared to the ones with pure compositions provide a broader range of options in the fields of biodiversity, conservation, protection and restoration. Nearly all forest plantations are established as monocultures, but research has shown that there are potential advantages to be gained by using carefully designed species mixtures in place of monocultures...

soil water availability and the renewal of oak forest stands in a coastal mediterranean area: an experimental study

this study was aimed to assess the causes of the structural decline in the renewal rate of apristine oak forest close to rome (central italy) by analyzing long-term measurements of the water budget in open and fenced areas. despite dry climate conditions in the area, long-term soil moisture measurements at 100 cm soil depth indicated that an enough large amount of water is available to oaks dur...

Effects of nitrogen saturation on tree growth and death in a mixed-oak forest

Ecologists have long treated temperate forests as systems limited by nitrogen (N) availability. Widespread concern about the effects of anthropogenic N on forested ecosystems has inspired experimental simulation of the effects of chronic N addition. This study investigates the effects of 8 years (1996–2003) of simulated chronic N deposition on tree growth and mortality in an upland mixed-oak fo...
